82 Percent of Anne Arundel County Residents Favor Making English the Official Language of Maryland

A new survey by the Anne Arundel Community College Center for the Study of Local Issues has found that 82 percent of Anne Arundel County residents want to make English the official language of Maryland. The poll of 419 country residents was conducted March 10-13, 2008 and has a margin of error of +/- 5 percent. Only 14 percent of those polled were unfavorable toward the idea.

The proposal to make English the official language was one of the most widely supported issues in the Spring 2008 semiannual survey, which can be found here.

Delegate Pat McDonough has introduced legislation to make English the official language of Maryland. The full text of H.B. 886 can be found on the U.S. English website here. On March 12, U.S. English participated in a hearing on this bill in the House Health and Government Operations Commitee.
