H.R. 997 Co-Sponsor Total Nears 100

H.R. 997, the English Language Unity Act, picked up five new co-sponsors in the House of Representatives yesterday, increasing the total number of supporters to 97. Just two months into the new session, H.R. 997 is one of the most widely supported bills in the 111th Congress.

Joining Rep. Steve King and the 92 other sponsors of the bill are:
* Rep. Steve Scalise. Rep. Scalise has been a strong supporter of official English legislation since coming to Congress in 2007. In addition to his support of H.R. 997, Rep. Scalise also recently became the 18th co-sponsor of H.R. 764, the American Elections Act.
* Rep. Shelley Moore Capito. Rep. Capito is in her fifth term representing West Virginia’s Second Congressional District. During her time in Congress, Rep. Capito has been a consistent supporter of making English the official language. Last session, Rep. Capito was among the recipients of an “A in English” award from U.S. English, Inc.
* Rep. Bob Goodlatte. Another “A in English” award winner, Rep. Goodlatte has been working to uphold the unifying bond of the English language since he began representing Virginia’s Sixth Congressional District in 1993.
* Rep. Jeff Fortenberry. Currently in his third term representing Nebraska’s First Congressional District, Rep. Fortenberry has been a supporter of official English legislation since coming to Congress in 2005. He was a recipient of an “A in English” award for his dedication to reducing government multilingualism.
* Rep. Adam Putnam. Rep. Putnam is a long-time supporter of official English legislation during his five terms representing Florida’s 12th Congressional District. A supporter of H.R. 997 in the 108th, 109th and 110th Congresses, Rep. Putnam was also given an “A in English” award last May.
