Rep. Gregg Harper Increases Number of H.R. 997 Co-Sponsors to 106

March 18, 2009

Rep. Gregg Harper became the newest co-sponsor of H.R. 997 yesterday, raising the total number of co-sponsors of legislation to make English the official language of the United States to 106. Introduced by Rep. Steve King in February, H.R. 997 would limit government multilingualism and give U.S. federal agencies a common sense policy that promotes English acquisition.

A former attorney, Rep. Harper is in his first term representing Mississippi’s Third Congressional District. He was elected to seat formerly held by strong official English supporter Rep. Chip Pickering, who announced his retirement last year.

Rep. Harper is the second U.S. House member from Mississippi to become a co-sponsor of H.R. 997. He joins Rep. Gene Taylor as one of the 106 bi-partisan co-sponsors from 35 states.
