U.S. English State Legislative Update

March 26, 2009

Connecticut Representative John Piscopo has introduced legislation to make English the official language of Connecticut. If H.B. 5968 is enacted, Connecticut would become the 31st state to make English its official language. A 2007 poll by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research found that 67 percent of Connecticut likely voters want to make English the official language of the Nutmeg State.

In South Carolina, Rep. Thad Viers and a number of his colleagues have introduced H.B. 3771, which would strengthen the state’s existing official English law. H.B. 3771 is similar to S. 3, which was introduced earlier this session by Senate President Glenn McConnell. In 2008, the South Carolina Senate approved similar legislation, but the measure was not considered in the House.

To date, official English measures have been introduced in 22 states. To see if legislation is pending in your state, click here and select your state from the drop down menu.
