111 in the 111th: Rep. Childers is the Newest Co-Sponsor of H.R. 997

April 28, 2009

Democrat Travis Childers signed on as the newest co-sponsor of H.R. 997 yesterday, becoming the 111th member of Congress to support the English Language Unity Act in the 111th Session of Congress. Originally elected by the people of the first Congressional District of Mississippi to fill the unexpired term of now-Senator Roger Wicker, Rep. Childers was elected to his first full term in November.

The co-sponsorship of Rep. Childers fulfills a campaign pledge that he made to support official English legislation if elected to Congress in 2008. Childers becomes the 65th pledge signer to follow through on a campaign promise in support of official English.

H.R. 997 was introduced by Rep. Steve King in February and now has 111 bi-partisan co-sponsors representing 35 states.
