Rep. Barrett Becomes the 114th Co-Sponsor of H.R. 997

Rep. J. Gresham Barrett of South Carolina became the newest co-sponsor of H.R. 997 yesterday, bringing the total number of co-sponsors of the English Language Unity Act to 114.

First elected to serve the Third Congressional District of South Carolina in 2002, Rep. Barrett was a co-sponsor of official English legislation in the 108th, 109th and 110th Congresses. He was honored with an “A in English” award from U.S. English, Inc. for his support of measures to promote English in the 110th Congress.

U.S. English, Inc. is the nation's oldest and largest non-partisan citizens' action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of the English language in the United States. Founded in 1983 by the late Sen. S.I. Hayakawa of California, U.S. English, Inc. (www.usenglish.org) now has more than 1.8 million members.
