Addition of Rep. Aderholt Increases H.R. 997 Co-Sponsor List to 117

June 10, 2009

Support for official English legislation increased again yesterday, as Alabama Representative Robert Aderholt added his name as a co-sponsor of the English Language Unity Act. The seven-term Representative from Alabama’s Fourth Congressional District is the second new co-sponsor of H.R. 997 this week and the third this month. Rep. Aderholt's support of the bill brings the total number of co-sponsors of H.R. 997 to 117 from 36 states.

Since coming to Congress in 1997, Rep. Aderholt has been an enthusiastic supporter of efforts to unite our diverse nation under the English language. He has supported legislation to make English the official language of the United States consistently, and was a recipient of an “A in English” Award from U.S. English in 2008.

Introduced by Rep. Steve King in February, H.R. 997 would make English the official language of the United States and limit government multilingualism to areas such as emergency services, tourism and education. The measure is currently pending in the House Judiciary and House Education and Workforce committees.
